Product Description From a noted pioneer in sports medicine comes a breakthrough regimen for stopping back pain once and for all without surgery.
Eighty-percent of Americans suffer some form of low-back pain usually due to a herniated disk but long-term relief is rarely achieved.
As a physician specializing in treating athletes, Dr. Vijay Vad has spent years researching how to cure back pain using medical yoga and Pilates. Profiled in The Wall Street Journal, his program requires just fifteen minutes a day for eight weeks to restore flexibility and prevent future injuries.
Offering a proven alternative to invasive surgery, Dr. Vad s Back Rx provides the best of mind/body medicine by giving readers three step-by-step exercise series, demonstrated in 130 precise photographs, for implementing his popular program at home. Even readers with severely limited mobility will rejoice in Dr. Vad s gentle introductory workout. Progressing through his self-paced program, they will discover a new range of exercises, breathing techniques, and tips for self-massage. For those who want to go even further and use this program for more than the treatment of a single injury, an advanced workout is included that puts readers on the road to peak performance.
The perfect combination of modern medicine, Pilates innovations, and ancient yoga postures, Back Rx builds important new fundamentals for lifelong freedom from pain.
Back exerciseAugust 8, 2010 richard rosemont(Port St. Lucie, Florida, US) I like the book. Simple explanations and pictures of the various exercises makes it easy to pick it up, read a bit and begin doing the exercises. And they seem to work, I've been doing them for about two weeks and feel a difference. The author is an MD and gives, I feel good advice on living with and reducing back pain. It's certainly worth a try especially if you are considering surgery.
Informative bookJuly 12, 2010 curlyq The Back RX book is very helpful. The book has pictures that clearly show the exercises so there is no guessing. It also goes from easy to more advanced, which makes it good for choosing the series that's best for you.Back RX: A 15-Minute-a-Day Yoga- and Pilates-Based Program to End Low Back Pain
ended back painJune 21, 2010 Docs Hawk(Sydney, Australia) 8 years of back pain which had eventually become chronic. I tried all the o's; osteo, chiro, physio but with only short term success, and I read a lot of literature on the physiology of the back. A yoga instructor friend of mine recommended this book to me and I started using it daily. After 12 months I was pain free and returned to doing all the sports I love such as skiing, running and golf. 5 years on and I still use Back Rx 2 or 3 times a week to keep my back tuned in and even just as relaxation. At 15 minutes a day its easy to find the time.
Not all back pain is the same and some needs more than exercise, particularly if skeletal based rather than muscular. However, if you're prepared to commit the time (12 months) to let this book work it is far and away the best thing you'll ever buy for your back.
Working So FarOctober 25, 2009 Third Age Traveler 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My doctor suggested this book after I suffered an extremely painful pinched nerve on a Friday night. Left me crying all weekend and wondering whether I should go to the hospital when painkillers did not work well. I am only working on the A level yoga right now, but I read the material explaining why the exercises would work, and it all makes intellectual sense to me. The exercises are do-able. Some are exercises I did on Wii fit--only now I am doing them lying down. I am concentrating on my deep breathing which adds oxygen. I feel so much better, but I incorporated this with the PT stretches I was also given by the therapists. At the very least, doing these will not hurt, and I hope to really be in tip-top condition as I continue.
stronger and more flexibleOctober 16, 2009 Timothy P. Lyons(addison, ny United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The book worked for me. Anyone doing these exercises as described will be better off for it. After a lower back injury, I started out with the 'easy' stuff. I progressed to 'series B'--and use it for maintainance and prevention. My quality of life is much better.
